The Commodore' Rally 2018

The fleet gather in autumnal sunshine in Lymington to enjoy the last HROA rally of the season.

Hosted at the smart Royal Lymington Yacht Club, the association's traditional 'Commodore's Rally' over the last weekend of September, was 'standing room only' for the Saturday morning talk by Caspar Craven, and full to capacity for the rally dinner in the evening, with a magician entertaining members, followed by a pub style quiz to test diners on all things Hallberg Rassy.

As so many boats gathered in the Lymington Yacht Haven on Friday to enjoy the association's famed pontoon party, some wondered whether the concrete floats would manage to cope with the numbers. Happily all was well and there was no risk of rally goers' feet getting wet as we all gathered around Sealion, the HROA 'Party Boat', loaded to the gunwales with fine wine, soft drinks, and nibbles.

Saturday morning took members to the Royal Lym for author and yachtsman Caspar Craven's talk about 'Where The Magic Happens' taking his young family, including three small children, sailing around the world on his Oyster 53. Caspar amazed us by revealing that when planning for this life changing voyage not only did his wife not sail and suffered seasickness, not only had the family just expanded with a new baby, but also they had no boat.

The evening brought everyone back to the Royal Lym clubhouse for the rally dinner, with a magician moving amongst us all, hiding cards we had chosen in sealed water bottles, and generally making things appear and disappear. Later the association's brains were taxed with a Hallberg Rassy themed quiz, questions led from the HROA Committee. How about this one? When did Harry Hallberg and Christophe Rassy become partners? Answer: They didn't.

Blessed by fine weather over the weekend, the rally departed for points east and west from the Solent over the Sunday. A huge thanks from all to our Vice Commodore Kathy Saunders for all her hard work in making such a great weekend.
